HC Deb 02 April 1979 vol 965 cc516-7W
Mr. Penhaligon

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the number of people in full-time employment within the county of Cornwall for a recent convenient month, and the number for the same month in 1977, 1975, 1973, 1971, 1969 and 1967.

Mr. Golding

Employment figures for both full-time and part-time workers are available from the annual census of employment for 1971 and later years but figures for 1971 and earlier years, based on counts of national insurance cards, do not identify these categories separately.

Following is the information available for the years to 1975 and also for 1976, the latest date for which figures for counties are available.

Full-time† Part-time (Thousands) Total
June 1967 NA NA 98.5
June 1969 NA NA 98.9
June 1971(a) NA NA 100.6
(b) 93.4 17.1 110.5
June 1973 97.1 22.2 119.3
June 1975 96.5 24.3 120.7
June 1976 95.9 24.9 120.7
Note: Estimates for the years prior to 1971 are based on counts of national insurance cards. Those for subsequent years are from the census of employment.Figures on both bases are available for 1971 and are given in the table.
* Figures for counties are aggregates of figures for employment office areas. Where these straddle county boundaries they are allocated to counties on a "best fit" basis.
† Full-time workers are defined as those normally employed for more than 30 hours per week.
NA = Not available.
