HC Deb 24 October 1978 vol 955 c912W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will make a statement on the printing and issuing of his leaflets "Cash help from Supplementary Benefits" as published in Welsh, Greek, Turkish, Gujarati, Urdu, Bengali, Hindi and Punjabi; what was the cost of these leaflets; why the SL8 leaflet in Gujarati was printed and published upside down; who was responsible for this; and what action he has taken or intends taking to have these leaflets in the languages of all recipients, including French, German, Italian, Polish, Russian, Bulgarian, Czechoslovakian, Serbo-Croat and other languages of the known large groups of immigrant beneficiaries.

Mr. Deakins

On the initiative of the Supplementary Benefits Commission, translations of these two supplementary benefit leaflets in the eight languages were issued earlier this year, as part of our general publicity programme. The cost of producing the leaflets was £3,250. Only two words on the cover of the Gujarati leaflet SL8 were printed upside down, through an error in typesetting. There are no plans for publishing translations of the leaflets in other languages at present.
