HC Deb 27 November 1978 vol 959 cc23-4W
Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what has been the movement, in real terms, in funds available to the British Tourist Authority for overseas promotion, for each year since 1970; and if he will express this annually, in real terms, as a percentage increase or decrease on the 1970 figure.

Mr. Meacher:

The figures are as follows:

Authority totalling about £15 million. Most of it is spent on publicity, marketing and research to the benefit of the country as a whole, including Nottinghamshire. From these funds the English tourist board also contributes to the income of the non-statutory regional tourist boards, and in the last financial year provided about 44 per cent. of the East Midlands board's finance. The extension of tourist project assistance which I announced in my reply to the hon. Member for Aberdare (Mr. Evans) on 22nd November will benefit tourism in part of Nottinghamshire.
