§ 34. Mr. James Lamondasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what response has been made by the British Government to the latest proposals made by the Warsaw Pact countries at the Vienna talks on mutual and balanced force reductions.
§ Mr. JuddWe wish to see progress in the negotiations and, with our Allies, we have therefore welcomed the Eastern proposals of June as a definite move towards the Western position. However, disagreement remains on the size of the disparity between the forces of East and West in Central Europe. It is to resolve this problem that current efforts in Vienna are being directed. Any Western moves on substance are of course a matter for decision within the Alliance.
