HC Deb 15 November 1978 vol 958 c277W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the senior secondary subjects in Tayside where deficiencies in teacher supply have been experienced as at August 1978; and what steps have been taken to achieve recruitment to standard.

Mr. McElhone

Authorities were asked in October to report the number of unfilled vacancies in secondary schools by subject. The following table shows the numbers reported by the Tayside regional council:

Subject Tayside
English 6
Modern languages 5
Classics 2
Mathematics 4
Biology 2
Chemistry 4
Physics 5
Business studies 3
Home economics 1
Technical 1
Music 3

The recruitment of teachers to fill these vacancies is a matter for the regional council. The information in the table above, together with the national information which will be derived from the September 1978 school census, will be taken into account in considering the arrangements for intake to teacher training courses in session 1978–80.
