Mr. Jim Callaghanasked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he is satisfied with the present standard of road maintenance in the Greater Manchester county districts.
§ Mr. HoramWe believe that the present standards of maintenance on motorways and trunk roads are reasonable, given limited resources. It is for the Greater Manchester County Council as highway authority to assess needs and priorities for maintenance of local roads in its districts and to establish standards. We have, since 1976, been surveying the condition, annually, of trunk and local roads in collaboration with local authorities and will watch the situation with care.
