HC Deb 12 May 1978 vol 949 cc651-2W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish a table showing for the most recent period available the number of accidents at work notified to Her Majesty's Inspecorate, per 1,000 man days worked, for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, respectively.

Mr. John Grant

The Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission informs me that no information in the form required is available for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland separately.

Accidents are at present reported to the Health and Safety Executive under legislation passed before the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 came into force and statistics collected by the different enforcement authorities of HSE are not all on the same basis. No figures are available related to man days worked and only for certain sectors are reliable numbers of persons at risk available.

total numbers registered as unemployed at 9th March 1978

England 2.1
Wales 3.4
Scotland 5.5
Northern Ireland 4.2
