§ Mr. Georgeasked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people, at the latest count, in the Walsall area are covered by: temporary employment subsidy, the job release scheme, the job creation programme, the work experience programme, the community industry scheme, youth employment subsidies, the job introduction scheme, small firms employment subsidies; training places supported by industry, and Manpower Services Commission special courses for young people, respectively.
§ Mr. GoldingI regret that these figures are not available in exactly the form requested, but the following information for the Walsall area is relevant. 1,311 workers have benefited from the temporary employment subsidy. 146 people have been helped under the job creation programme. 84 places have been provided under the work experience programme. 157 young people have been helped under the youth employment subsidy. Two disabled people have been helped under the job introduction scheme for the disabled. Last year, 235 people received training in the training services division's Wolverhampton district—which includes Walsall—through the Manpower Services Commission's special courses for young people.
There have been no approved applications under the job release scheme since this was extended to cover Walsall last month. There is no community industry unit at present. The small firms employment subsidy does not extend to Walsall, and I regret that area breakdowns of the numbers of training places in industry supported by special grants and awards are not available.
