asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to what sum it would be necessary to raise the married couple's personal allowance to restore its real value to the level pertaining at 5th April 1973.

The married allowance would have to be raised to £1,635.

This estimate is based on the change in the General Index of Retail Prices—all items, between March 1973 and March 1978, the latest date available.

The figure takes account of earned income relief in 1972–73.
