HC Deb 08 May 1978 vol 949 cc390-1W
Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland, in view of the confusion throughout Scotland in relation to the public holiday on 1st May, if he will consult local authorities and representatives of industry and trade unions in relation to the arrangements for this holiday in 1979.

Mr. Harry Ewing

With the recent change in the statutory day of local government elections from the first Tuesday to the first Thursday in May the way has been cleared for islands and district councils to arrange, in accordance with the recommendation of the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities, for the May Day holiday to be observed on the first Monday in May from 1979 onwards. I see no need therefore for a survey.
