Mr. Higginsasked the Prime Minister which Department has the principal responsibility for holidays in lieu of public or bank holiday, in view of the fact that both the Treasury and the Department of Employment have answered on this topic; and if he will ensure consistency in the selection of Departments to answer in the future.
§ The Prime MinisterThe Treasury is responsible for the legislation under which bank and substitute holidays are proclaimed, but the Department of Employment is responsible for the timing of substitute days. On the basis of that division of responsibility, I am satisfied that the hon. Member's recent Questions were properly handled.
