HC Deb 13 March 1978 vol 946 cc40-1W
Mr. Lawson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish a table showing the percentage increase in manufacturing productivity between 1973 and 1977, and for each of the preceding five four-year periods, viz., 1969 to 1973, 1965 to 1969, 1961 to 1965, 1957 to 1961, and 1953 to 1957.

Mr. Denzil Davies

The table below shows the percentage change in output at constant prices per person employed in manufacturing industries.

1953–1957 + 8.7
1957–1961 + 9.2
1961–1965 +16.3
1965–1969 +16.1
1969–1973 +18.2
1973–1977 (provisional) + 0.1

Output is measured by the index of manufacturing production. Persons employed include employees in employment, employers and self-employed persons: full-time and part-time workers are all counted as full units.

Mr. Lawson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, further to the Written Answer to the hon. Member for Blaby, Official Report, 27th February, column 85, if he will publish a revised table of changes in output per head of occupied population in various countries between 1973 and 1976 on the basis of current exchange rates instead of 1970 exchange rates.

Mr. Denzil Davies

I shall let the hon. Member have a reply as soon as possible.
