asked the Secretary of State for Trade how many investigations into substantive anti-dumping or countervailing duties have taken place; and if he will list the products which have been investigated for anti-dumping action since 1st January 1971.

Since 1st January 1971 my Department has undertaken 105 formal investigations into allegations of dumping or subsidy, involving 50 products. These were:—

  • candied peel
  • wood chipboard (from nine countries)
  • cauliflowers
  • compound fertilisers (5)
  • magnesium ingots
  • glass grains
  • saccharin (2)
  • ladies' raincoats (2)
  • steel reinforcing bars (2)
  • offset litho printing presses
  • hexamine
  • acrylic sheet
  • chromic acid
  • potato granules
  • twist-wrapping machines
  • pig iron
  • maleic anhydride (4)
  • barbed wire
  • cutting and wrapping machines
  • high density polyethylene (3)
  • files (4)
  • men's leather shoes (5)
  • dimethyl formamide (2)
  • louvre doors
  • colour TV tubes
  • battered onion rings
  • dowels and mouldings (2)
  • plywood (2)
  • dumper trucks
  • insulating board (5)
  • sporting shotguns
  • spectrophotometers
  • harvesters
  • PVC coated fabrics (2)
  • polyester tops
  • alarm clocks (7)
  • horticultural glass (6)
  • ophthalmic lenses

On 1st July 1977, responsibility for most investigations passed to the EEC Commission, which since that date has announced 59 investigations involving 16 products. Most of these result from the basic price scheme for steel imports introduced in January of this year. The products involved were:

  • haematite pig iron (from two countries)
  • quartz crystals
  • bearing housings
  • steel tubes
  • titanium
  • kraft liner (5)
  • hole punching machines
  • heavy steel forgings
  • shapes and sections (5)
  • tall oil rosin
  • 12
  • iron and steel coils for re-rolling (9)
  • thin iron and steel sheets and plates (4)
  • thick iron and steel sheets and plates (9)
  • galvanised iron and steel sheets and plates (10)
  • wire rod (6)
  • iron and steel angles
  • wood chipboard (2)

The Commission also carried out a substantial number of anti-dumping investigations before 1st July. The United Kingdom industry had an interest in a number of these.

Since 1st January 1971, the United Kingdom has imposed 19 provisional and 14 substantive duties. The Commission has imposed 24 provisional and two substantive duties. In addition to these duties, a large number of cases were settled as a result of voluntary undertakings by exporters.
