§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will meet the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis to discuss whether or not orders should ban all public marches, in the event of the National Front's holding demonstrations during the Notting Hill Carnival and 1st May Labour demonstrations.
§ Mr. Merlyn ReesUnder the Public Order Act 1936, it would be for the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis in the first instance to decide, in the light of the circumstances at the time, whether or not to seek my consent to an order prohibiting the holding of public processions because of the threat of serious public disorder.
