§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why the grant to the Commission for Racial Equality was increased in the year 1976–77 from £149,000 to £2,578,000 in the year 1977–78; and, in view of the fact that immigration has now been reduced to a mere trickle, what action he has taken or proposes to take to reduce these grants.
§ Mr. Merlyn ReesThe Commission for Racial Equality did not assume its full statutory responsibilities until 13th June 1977, and expenditure in 1976–77 was limited to preparatory work in setting the Commission up. The Commission's duties are not directly related to the rate of immigration.
