Family Allowance/Child Benefit Scheme

Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list: (a) the administrative cost of the family allowance/child benefit scheme, (b) the money paid out in child benefit and (c) if he will express the administrative cost as a percentage of the moneys paid out in child benefit.

Mr. Orme

It is estimated that for 1977–78

1. (a) the administration cost of child benefit was in the region of £40 million;
2. (b) child benefit paid was £875 million; and
3. (c) the administration costs were about 4.6 per cent. of the benefit expenditure.
