HC Deb 19 June 1978 vol 952 cc70-1W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list all local authorities which employ less than 2 per cent. registered disabled people; how many registered disabled people have been engaged by each of those authorities in the last 12 months; what action he is taking to increase employment of disabled people by local authorities; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Guy Barnett

The names of the local authorities employing less than 2 per cent. registered disabled as at 1st June 1977 are available in the November 1977 issue of theDepartment of Employment Gazette. Information about the numbers of registered people engaged by local authorities over the past 12 months is not available centrally. This Department, together with the Manpower Services Commission, has been consulting the local authority associations about the employment of disabled people. I understand that as a result of these discussions the associations are considering writing to their members with advice on ways of improving employment opportunities for disabled people within local government.
