§ Mr. Abseasked the Secretary of State for Employment why regulations under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act requiring notification of intent to carry on work involving genetic manipulation have been delayed; why the intended regulations are confined to notification and exclude control of the use of the products of genetic manipulation; and when, the regulations will come into effect.
§ Mr. John GrantThe regulations have necessitated extensive consultation. The Health and Safety at Work, etc. Act 1974 provides the means of protecting workers and the public from hazards arising from the use of the products of genetic manipulation. The Health and Safety Executive will keep the need for additional regulations under constant review. The regulations come into effect on 1st August 1978.
