§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Industry what is the salary payable after the implementation of the recommendations of the Boyle Committee to the chairman of Cable and Wireless Ltd., in view of the fact that the appointment is on a part-time basis of 3½ days a week; what is the average number of hours worked; and what other sums are payable to the chairman from public funds.
§ Mr. Les HuckfieldThe Top Salaries Review Body recommended, for the post of chairman of Cable and Wireless Ltd., a salary that on a full-time basis would be £28,000 per annum. As my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister announced on 4th July, the salary levels recommended by the Review Body are to be introduced by stages with the final stage being paid on 1st April 1980. On that basis, and on the assumption that the chairman will be expected to devote three and a half days a week to the company, the chairman's annual salary would be £19,000 as from 1st April 1980.
The working time of the chairman in terms of hours depends on the flow of business, but I am sure that the chairman 41W devotes much more time than three and a half days a week to the company's business when circumstances so dictate.
