asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received from the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council about nasal cancer in workers in the leather boot and shoe industry; and if he will make a statement.

I am pleased to tell my hon. Friend that the Government intend to prescribe nasal carcinoma in workers engaged in the manufacture or repair of leather boots and shoes as an industrial disease for industrial injuries benefits under the Social Security Act 1975. I have accepted a recommendation to this effect by the council following its consideration of the results of independent research into the incidence of this disease in the footwear industry.
