HL Deb 19 July 1978 vol 395 c418WA
Lord DUNLEATH

asked Her Majesty's Government

What eventual proposals they have in mind for the disposal or recycling of domestic and industrial waste in Northern Ireland following the oral reply given to him by the Baroness Stedman on 5th April 1976.

Lord MELCHETT

Waste disposal in Northern Ireland is a function of district councils and the choice of the method of disposal, including reclamation or recycling, rests with each council.

The Draft Pollution Control and Local Government (Northern Ireland) Order which was approved by the House recently, would provide councils with specific powers to recycle or reclaim waste. In addition each council would be required to indicate in the waste disposal plan for its district the extent to which it intended to use reclamation or recyling to deal with waste.

House adjourned at twelve minutes before eight o'clock.
