§ Mr. George Robertsonasked the Secretary of State for Trade if he has received any reports regarding competition against Scotch whisky by Japanese whisky blends containing Scotch malt whisky, in view of the known large-scale promotions in that market by Japanese distillers.
§ Mr. Meacher, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 11th July 1978; Vol. 953, c. 507], gave the following information:
I am aware that Scotch whisky sold in Japan faces competition from Japanese 47W brands of whisky, particularly those in the premium grade, some of which are blends containing Scotch malt. The matter is being considered amongst others in the distilling section working group of the Economic Development Committee for the Food and Drink Manufacturing Industry.
