§ Mrs. Wiseasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what powers are available to licensing justices to prevent strip shows in public houses.
§ Mr. Merlyn ReesLicensing justices have no powers specifically for that purpose. The extent to which their discretionary powers under section 51 of the Public Health Acts Amendment Act 1890 —in areas where it is in force—or under the Licensing Act 1964 could be so used can be determined only by the courts.
§ Mrs. Wiseasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will seek to strengthen the powers of licensing justices to safeguard the public interest by refusing licences to public houses where strip shows take place.
§ Mr. Merlyn ReesI have no proposals at present to alter the powers of licensing justices, but I will see that the point is considered in any future review of their powers.
