HC Deb 13 July 1978 vol 953 c754W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how the current lead content of petrol in grammes per litre of 0–45 grammes per litre in the United Kingdom compares with that obtaining in each country in the EEC; and what will be the permitted maximum in 1981.

Mr. Horam

I have been asked to reply.

The following, expressed in grammes per litre, are the limits on lead content of petrol currently applying in other EEC countries:

  • Belgium—0.55
  • Denmark—0.40
  • France—0.55
  • West Germany—0.15
  • Ireland—0.64 (commercial limit only)
  • Italy—0.62 (commercial limit only)
  • Luxembourg—0.55
  • Netherlands—0.40

In accordance with the terms of a recently agreed EEC directive, it is proposed to reduce the limit in the United Kingdom to 0.40 from 1st January 1981.
