HC Deb 03 July 1978 vol 953 c39W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will take steps to revise the procedure by which chronic offenders in Great Britain are given access to bail;

(2) what steps he will take to reverse the growing tendency for violent criminals previously convicted of crimes like armed robbery to commit new crimes of violence while on bail.

Dr. Summerskill

The law already provides for the refusal of bail where the court is satisfied that there are substantial grounds for believing that the defendant would commit a further offence.
