asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many girls of school age are now held in prison in each age group; how many of these are on remand; and how many are serving sentences.

On 31st December 1977 there were two girls aged under 16 in a prison or a remand centre. Both were aged 15. One was held in a remand centre awaiting trial and the other in a prison awaiting sentence.
