§ Mr. Carter-Jonesasked the Secretary of State for Employment how many jobcentres there are in the United Kingdom; and of these how many have been built or extensively redesigned in the last five years.
§ Mr. GoldingI am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that during the period 14th May 1973 to 31st December 1977 there were 389 jobcentres opened in the United Kingdom. Because of the need for town centre siting very few jobcentres have been purpose built; most have been housed in suitably adapted shop units and, as use is made of the existing estate wherever possible, 92 are in converted employment offices.
