HC Deb 17 January 1978 vol 942 cc208-10W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister for the Civil Service whether he will give a detailed list of the number of occasions when the Government have failed to carry out recommendations and awards on wages and salaries of independent committees and boards and the number of workers involved, for the longest and most convenient period of time.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

I can only answer for those areas in which my Department has a direct interest—that is. industrial and non-industrial civil servants, the Review Body on Top Salaries—other than for Members of Parliament—and the Armed Forces Review Body.

Over the past five years, the only areas in which recommendations or awards have been varied are those covered by the Review Body on Top Salaries in its Sixth Report, where the recommended salaries for the higher judiciary (160), some members of the Higher Civil Service (260) and some senior officers of the Armed Forces (63) have not yet been paid in full. The recommendations in that report for nationalised industries chairmen and board members (330) have been the subject of further consideration by the Government. The position was given by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister in answer to a Question from my hon. Friend the Member for Walsall South (Mr. George) on 15th December.—[Vol.941, c. 305–6.]
