§ Mr. Litterick
asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is his Department's estimate of the short- and long-term employment effects of the investment of £70 million in new technology in the sheet glass industry.
§ Mr. Golding
The employment effects of such an investment will depend on the extent to which the new technology in question is purely labour-saving and the extent to which it permits a level of output higher than that which would otherwise have occurred. The short-term38W employment effect will also depend on the amount and nature of any construction work involved in the projects towards which the investment is directed.
