The main buildings were accepted serially by the board during the period March to August 1971, enabling the first patients to be admitted in October 1971. Formal hand over of all buildings was completed in March 1972.

Because of defects revealed after formal hand over, no final certificate has yet been issued but the estimated final cost in 1972 was of the order of £4.25 million.
