HC Deb 27 February 1978 vol 945 c99W
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what sum the Government are making available for showing the Burrell Collection; whether this sum represents 50 pet cent. of the total cost involved; what percentage of the total cost is to be paid by the city of Glasgow District Council; and what is the estimated total cost.

Mr. McElhone

The estimated total cost of the new gallery to house the Burrell Collection is £12,162,462. In view of the outstanding national importance of the collection my right hon. Friend has offered the city of Glasgow District Council 50 per cent. of that sum—subject to certain adjustments for future price changes—after it has been reduced by the appropriate amount from the fund left by Sir William Burrell for the housing of the collection. My right hon. Friend has also offered to meet half of that part of the cost of the sewer to serve the gallery which will fall to be met by the district council.
