HC Deb 20 February 1978 vol 944 cc443-4W
Mrs. Bain

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will make a statement on the future of PanAm Airways' operations at Prestwick Airport, Scotland and in the United Kingdom in general; what is the most recent available estimate of the value of freight services operated by PanAm at Prestwick Airport; and what discussions he has held with representatives of North West Orient as to the possible implication for employees at Prestwick Airport should that airline decide to fly the Prestwick route.

Mr. Clinton Davis

Under the United Kingdom/United States Air Services Agreement (Bermuda 2), the United States Government have designated PanAm to operate an all-cargo service to Prestwick as well as London and Manchester. The value of this service is commercially confidential. Northwest Orient has also been designated to operate a passenger and cargo service to Prestwick but has not yet applied to my Department for the necessary operating permit. The level of services operated is a matter for the commercial judgment of the airlines, and I can make no forecast of the consequences for employment at Prestwick.
