HC Deb 15 February 1978 vol 944 cc243-4W
Mr. Grylls

asked the Secretary of State for Industry, following the contract he signed with the Polish Government, what contracts have been placed so far in connection with the Anglo-Polish ships deal; what are the names of the companies with which the contracts have been placed; what is the value of each contract; what is the nature of the goods being supplied in each case; and what percentage of the contracts placed so far have gone to countries other than the United Kingdom.

Mr. Kaufman,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 14th February 1978; Vol. 944] gave the following information: Following the communiqué signed by my right hon. Friend and the Polish Vice Minister for Foreign Trade and Shipping on 21st November 1977 British Shipbuilders have concluded a contract with the Anglo-Polish Shipping Venture Co. Ltd. for the supply of 22 ships and two crane barges. I am advised by British Shipbuilders that at the time of the signature of the communiqué the customer had stipulated that certain materials and equipment to a total value between 11 per cent. and 12 per cent. of the costs should come from specified suppliers outside the United Kingdom. Details of subcontracts are primarily a matter for the shipbuilder concerned, but I understand that most of them have now been placed and that British Shipbuilders do not expect the total value placed outside the United Kingdom to exceed 14 per cent. of their costs.
