Mr. Litterick

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many people were remanded in custody by the courts in Northern Ireland during the last 12-month period for which this information is available; and what proportion of the total number of people charged this represents.

Mr. Concannon

From 1st January 1977 to 31st December 1977, 2,006 males and 129 females were remanded in custody to prisons in Northern Ireland. Some of these will subsequently have been released on bail. In addition, 455 boys and 95 girls were remanded in custody to training schools. During the same period 8,477 persons were charged with indictable offences in Northern Ireland.
