Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the maternal mortality rate in each of the past five years of mothers whose children were delivered by caesarean section.

Mr. Moyle

Maternal mortality per 100,000 total—live and still—births following delivery by caesarian section in England and Wales was as follows:

1971 3.7
1972 3.7
1973 3.9
1974 2.6
1975 2.8

Maternal mortality—ICD 630—678—in England and Wales was 13 per 100,000 total—live and still—births in each year 1973 to 1977 although for 1977 the figure is provisional.
