asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners convicted of murder, manslaughter or crimes involving grievous bodily harm are at Leyhill Open Prison; how many prisoners in each category have escaped from the prison in each of the last five years; and how many have been involved in violent crime during such escapes.

On 30th June 1978 there were 37 persons serving sentences at Leyhill Open Prison for the principal offence of murder, 18 for manslaughter and attempted murder, and three for wounding and grievous bodily harm. Escapees from the prison during the previous five years have included one manslaughter case in 1974 and two murder cases, one each in 1975 and 1976. No further offences were involved.
