Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many industrial development certificates have been refused in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, respectively, since 1st January 1977; what percentage they represent of the total number of applications from each country; and, of the certificates issued in the South East of England during 1977, what percentage of the total were for designated inner city locations.

The figures below cover all schemes for the period 1st January 1977 to 31st May 1978:

Notes: (1) IDCs are not required in Northern Ireland.

(2) IDCs are not required in Development Areas. These now include most of Scotland and Wales, but included the whole of Scotland up to 1 April 1978.

525 IDCs were approved in the South Eas Economic Planning Region in 1977. 14% were in the 13 London boroughs which are to be designated under the Inner Urban Areas Act (Greenwich. Lewisham, Newham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Islington, Lambeth, Hammersmith, Brent, Ealing, Haringey and Wandsworth).
