HC Deb 02 August 1978 vol 955 cc436-7W
Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the level of day care facilities for the elderly in the Manchester county districts; and how these compare with the levels in his Department's guidelines.

Mr. Moyle

The information is as follows:

LOCAL AUTHORITY DAY PLACES ON 31ST MARCH 1977 PER 1,000 POPULATION AGED 65 AND OVER (MID 1976 PROVISIONAL ESTIMATES)
Metropolitan District
Bolton 0.3
Bury 0.0
Manchester 13.2
Oldham 1.3
Rochdale 15.7
Salford 8.8
Stockport 0.0
Tameside 1.6
Trafford 2.5
Wigan 4.0

The Department's guidelines for the provision of day care facilities for the elderly is about three to four places per 1,000 population aged 65 or over, but is subject to review in the light of current research and changes in the age structure. The above figures do not include places in day centres not allocated to a particular client group; there are over 1,300 such places in Greater Manchester. In addition many voluntary organisations provide day care facilities for the elderly.
