HC Deb 24 April 1978 vol 948 c484W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the number of employees in the computer manufacturing industry in Scotland, England and Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Mr. Golding

At June 1976, the latest date for which detailed employment estimates are available, 6,300 employees were employed in the manufacture of electronic computers (Minimum List Heading 366 of the Standard Industrial Classificcation) in Scotland and 35,900 in England and Wales. In Northern Ireland very few were employed in the industry.

More up-to-date provisional estimates, available only for Great Britain as a whole show that 45,200 employees were employed in the industry at February 1978.
