§ Mr. John Garrettasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether it remains the policy of Her Majesty's Government as expressed by his predecessor in the Second Reading debate on the Exchequer and Audit Departments Bill of 1921, Official Report, 5th August 1921, column 1886, that the Comptroller and Auditor General should audit Government accounts officially and formally on behalf of the House of Commons, so that the responsibility of the House over them through its officer, the Comptroller and Auditor General, is signalised by statute.
