§ Mr. Sproatasked the Secretary of State for Social Services under what circumstances a pupil of over 16 years of age, temporarily expelled from school for bad behaviour, is entitled to receive supplementary benefit during the period of his expulsion.
§ Mr. OrmeSuch a pupil would be regarded as still attending school and supplementary benefit would not be paid. The only circumstances where the Supplementary Benefits Commission relaxes this general rule for schoolchildren are where the child is orphaned or estranged from his family, or has a family of his own to support, or is severely handicapped.
