HC Deb 14 April 1978 vol 947 cc573-4W
Mr. Cyril Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will make it a condition of any future loans or grants to the British Leyland Car Company that the only tyres that shall be fitted to their cars or trucks shall be of British manufacture.

Mr. Les Huckfield

No. Decisions as to the source of supply of any particular component must continue to be left to the commercial judgment of the company. However, I understand that British Leyland's practice is to purchase tyres for both cars and commercial vehicles from British manufacturers whenever possible and that foreign tyre purchase last year constituted a negligible proportion of the total.

which my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science has ministerial responsibility.
