§ Mr. MacGregorasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether it is the policy of Her Majesty's Government to leave in situ in appropriate cases chattels accepted by the Treasury in lieu of capital transfer tax; or whether such chattels are invariably allocated elsewhere.
§ Mr. Denzil Davies, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 12th April 1978], gave the following answer:
We are prepared to consider the retention of property accepted in lieu in the historic house with which it has been 509W associated when such houses are owned by private trusts which can comply with suitable arrangements for care and public access and where an important collection of chattels might otherwise be broken up. In such cases arrangements for surveillance and general responsibility by a public collection would be necessary.
