asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many local authorities operate concessionary fares schemes for retirement pensioners in their areas under a "permits" system; how many under a "tokens" system; and how many arrange for free transport on proof of retirement.

Concessionary fares are the responsibility of regional and islands councils. Five regional councils operate concessionary fares schemes for retirement pensioners under a permit system and three under a token system. One council—Lothian—has a permit system for those living within Edinburgh, which allows free travel on the city buses,
