Mr. Burden

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many engineering trainees there were in Government training centres on 1st January 1977 and 1978, respectively; and how many places were available on each date.

Mr. Golding

Government training centres ceased to exist in 1974 and were replaced by skillcentres run by the Manpower Services Commission. Statistics for skillcentres are available only for the end of each month. These were as follows:

Numbers in training in engineering 4,094

Numbers in training in engineering 3,729

Mr. Hayhoe

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the latest comparable percentage figures for unemployment in each of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries for which adjusted unemployment rates are available from Organisation for Economic Co-operation Development sources; and what were the previous quarterly figures during the last four years.

The figures requested as far as available are shown below. However, the OECD has advised that the figures it has published for the United Kingdom are under review and will be revised downwards on its next publication.
