asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total sum of public money expended by the Manpower Services Commission in 1977; how many new jobs were created by the Commission in 1977; and what was the average cost to public funds of each new job created.

The total sum of public money expended by the MSC in the calendar year 1977 is not available. However, the estimated grant in aid to the MSC for the financial year 1977–1978 is £466,836,000. I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that 63,574 temporary jobs were created under the job creation programmes in 1977 at
