asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (i) what was the expenditure on the Immigration Service Intelligence Unit 1976–77; what was the budgeted expenditure on the unit for 1977–78, and how many individuals are employed in the unit;
  2. (ii) what are the terms of reference of the Immigration Service Intelligence Unit.

The Immigration Service Intelligence Unit's staff costs for 1977-78 are estimated at £212,500. Thirty members of the Immigration Service and seven clerks are currently employed in the unit, compared with 29 and eight respectively in 1976-77. The unit's functions are to collate, evaluate, and disseminate information for the purpose of increasing the efficiency of the immigration control before, on and after entry; and to liaise with the police and other Government Departments in connection with evasion of the immigration control, including clandestine entry.
