HC Deb 04 April 1978 vol 947 c88W
Mr. Woodall

asked the Secretary, of State for Industry what is his estimate of the number of jobs which would be lost within the company and in the supplying industry if either British Leyland Ltd. or British Leyland Cars were to cease operations.

Mt Les Huckfield

Total United Kingdom employment in British Leyland at the end of 1977 was 172,000, of which 130,000 was accounted for by British Leyland Cars. It is estimated that at least as many further jobs in the supplying and other related industries would also be in jeopardy if British Leyland or its cars business were to cease trading. British Leyland obtains significant amounts of goods and services from some 7,000 firms.
