Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will adopt the declared policies of the TUC and the Labour Party Conferences to take Great Britain out of the Common Market.

Mr. Judd:

My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister has made clear that British withdrawal from the European Community is not a practical solution, and that the best way forward for us is to define the essential elements of a distinctive policy for Europe that will meet the legitimate concerns and interests of the British people and will strengthen unity and democracy in Europe. This position was endorsed by both the Labour Party Conference and by the TUC General Congress.
