HC Deb 26 October 1977 vol 936 c848W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has received from British subjects of Czech origin who have been told that relatives still living in Czechoslovakia will not be allowed to come to the United Kingdom to visit them unless they themselves first register with the Czech Embassy in London, and that if they fail to do so the Czech authorities will consider them to be illegally resident outside Czechoslovakia.

Mr. Luard:

There is no general requirement that British subjects of Czechoslovak origin must register at the Czechoslovak Embassy before their relatives living in Czechoslovakia will be allowed to visit them in the United Kingdom. In recent years, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has, however, received frequent representations from some of those British subjects who are regarded by the Czechoslovak authorities as illegally resident outside Czechoslovakia, and have thereby been prevented from meeting their relatives living in Czechoslovakia. These cases have been raised with the Czechoslovak authorities and, in recent months, there has been some progress in resolving the outstanding cases.
